so we have the family computer up stairs. about 50 feet away is my 360 and my laptop. they both need to be plugged in to ethernet. the main internet router is upstairs with the family computer. i figure i should buy a switch to split the ethernet two ways and run 2 50 foot cat 5 cables downstairs to my room, but cat 5 is expensive. any other ideas?

I have a wi-fi network as follows:

Downstairs (1st floor):
Linksys WRT54GS router
Acer Desktop PC hardwired to it and running Vista Home.

Third floor:
Dell Latitude D820 running both XP and Kubuntu (primarily Kubuntu).
Compaq Presario desktop running Kubuntu.
Both these machines are connected wirelessly to the router downstairs.

To expand:
I wish to have a switch up here (if that’s the way to go) because I wish to try adding my TiVo to the network
To do that, I’ll probably need to buy a switch because we’re about to add a laptop running probably Vista (XP is suddenly getting hard to find) which will use wi-fi internet access (for a total of four machines on the Linksys router).
Ideally, I’d like to use a wireless connection between the switch and the router downstairs.

It is possible to connect a switch wirelessly to a router? If so, is it very workable? Or secure (let’s not leave that out)? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance for your advice!
To me more clear (sorry, my bad), I wish to have a private network that serves my two computers and my Tivo and then have that network connect to the Linksys wireless router for internet access, so I’m also not sure if I need a switch or a second router, etc.
JustOnceK had a good suggestion, but unfortunately there are no “landline phone jacks” up here and we have a DSL internet connection, so that’s a no-go. Thanks for answering, though!

It’s my fault, I tried to set up a home network so I could get some files from my laptop to my PC, now, but instead of using the wireless network setup wizard I used the regular one, my PC is not connected through ethernet but a wireless adapter. Now I can’t connect to our household, or anyother wireless network, the wireless connection won’t even show up. How do I fix my ***** up? Thanks!

Well it said that ” 1 year protection for up to 3 PCs per household”. Does that mean I can use that same product key on 3 differnet computers in the house or do i have to buy another product key. Also does the 3 compters need to be networked some how in order for it to work.
Thanks that helped out

Recently my older brother changed the household network to a DNS (whatever that is). This screwed with all the connections.

So my dad got his computer working fine (that’s what I’m on now), and told me how to connect mine. My computer (which is running Windows 98) is connected to the internet — I know that because my instant messenger is working, and I’ve chatted with friends.

However, __no program other than the messenger (Trillian Basic 3) can connect to the internet__. I’ve tried multiple programs, to no avail, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, and AVG.

What do I need to do in order to get my other programs connected?

******
So far, since the network switch, all I have done is gone to Control Panel –> Network
Highlighted “TCP/IP -> Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC”, and clicked “Properties”, then specified an IP Address / Subnet Mask to use for the connection. I also installed a gateway.

Thanks so much, I have no clue what I’m doing when it comes to networking.
The problem isn’t the firewall… everything was working well before, and I checked the list of allowed programs.

Not to mention nothing willl run with the firewall off, either.

I’m thinking there’s a setting in Firefox I have to change.

*Very few* residents in the city rely on only one source of water, most use a combination of household piped network water connections, bottled/refill water, shallow and deep wells, public hydrants, and water vendors for their water supply needs.

Hello.

All of a sudden, during the past week or two, my google toolbar AND when I type in www.google.com has not been working.

It’s randomly worked maybe once or twice for a few minutes, and then it went back to its continuous state of not working. It’s weird.

* Also, I’ve noticed that it’s not been working on the computers on the household network. Whether that’s the house computers or folks that come over with their computers. Odd.

I’ve been doing spyware/virus scans everyday and that hasn’t helped the problem. I tried to maybe tweak my firewall (I use the XP one and Trend Micro) but that doesn’t help - why is every other website working then? I obviously don’t have google blocked. No settings had been altered - network, firewall, etc. - prior to the problem.

I don’t know what to do!! What else should I try? Please help!! Thanks!!!

[Only serious responses please, thanks.]

Pissed off at legislation regarding Social Benefits for unfit, uneducated illegal aliens who do not participate in out community versus taking care of our own? Yes!

I have decided, in addition to a severe lack of direction, the democratic and republican (note the small caps) are practicing “Divide and Conquer”:

Here is how it works:

A.)Illegal aliens use services, thus documenting and tracking them, but paying them sub minimum wage. Semi-unrestricted, this new Ultra-Underclass does America’s household cleaning and wretch jobs, is disposable, and at low wages, cost very little compared to paying Real Americans.

B.) Senior Citizens, the ones that built this current Social Structure, if kept worried and sick, will not participate in the side lines of lpolitical egislation. Vote they do, but a vote only means that Politicians enter office and then join the “Power Elite” who serve themselves.

Our Founding Fathers framed the US Constitution to maximize Americas ability to be flexible. When you divide and conquer, create illegal and enormous, power bureaucracies that have no checks on their actions, then we are have what we have:

“The Oligarchy”.

The Oligarchy is Machiavellian in structure, does one thing to appear gentle and kind, another thing to maintain it’s powerful strength and Patrician Power structure. Already, democrat or republican, we have an inherited ruler class. We are in the second and thrid gerneration of inhertied political offices.

People blame The Bushes, but actually this has been long in the making. I remember Walter Cronkite as the Great Commentator, the one who signed off every night, but was America’s “Night watchman”- calling 8pm, “All is Well”.

There are no more “Night Watchmen”, they are all hysterical buffoons. There are no more reporters, they are all, all of them from Oprah to Tom, to Katy, to Sue Simmons; Salon Gossipers. Some of us go to the Salons to listen, others go to the Whorehouses and Pubs to listen to Tomfoolery.

TV. It was TV that destroyed America. Not Ronald or Jimmy or George and George. Not drugs. TV.

There is no place of rest, or peace or quality life in America. TV has all the power and all the opinions and all the answers. No Michael Moore’s or Whoopi Goldberg’s can fight TV. They actually may be part of the problem- semi traitors, although we do love them.

There was once a movie, which, 25 years after it’s making, that dcumented this situation. News and Politics and Legistlation degenerated as a result of TV. The movie was called “Network” with Faye Dunaway and an all star cast.

Democratic societies are communities with enormous amounts of opinions, legislation, action, confusion and messy actions. However, as I recall, there was a certain “Orderly Direction” or general social value; everyone was organized around this lowerst common denomenator, regardless or race, religion or color. The times in the 1950’s to 1980’s were horrid in their racial separation, class conflicts, poverty, but there was a common direction.

And, as a recall, at base, the directions was maintenance of “Separation of Governmental Powers, Check and Balances”.

Historically, WWI and WWII were far more threatening, somber times that any post 9/11 events. The difference however, was that the Governmental Powers were limited, and we had Walter Cronkite’s and other admirable ones commenting and creating the necessary communal meetings around the fireplace every evening to tell the news, stories of the day.

Now everyone has “Own Person”, labels. Now everyone has internet and Blog sites and Websites, the ‘voting” is a click, the goal is to accrue the most clicks. That is nice, but not the point. The goal is to communicate, debate, formulate and activate. That is not a click, that is reading and writing. Now we are a Global Village of 10 billion people, all with no Political Power because we are passive. Passive is watching the TV (research proves the brain shifts down to the lowest neurological activity level when a person watched the TV) or clicking on web sites.

We have become a giant Pachinko Parlor. Watching and Clicking is gambling, and gambling is the one game that least favors the player, as the House always wins.

Why?

No one told us the rules.

Why”

Because the Political Elite wishes to maintain it’s power and is not going to tell us how they operate, or by what rules they operate, or the data and trends that indicated what they need to do to operate.

However, I have told you how they operate, why, and what they are doing.
